Meier Donation

GHS Alum Donates Artifacts to GHPS

    Meet Ellen Meier

Glencoe High School Alumnus Ellen Meier (class of 1982) of Golden Valley has donated several items of her own and items that had belonged to her parents, Willard and Virginia (Adelman) Meier, to the Glencoe Historical Preservation Society.

On Wednesday February 8, 2024 Wes Olson and Lon Roach met with Ellen at the GHPS room at the Glencoe City Center and viewed the items. Ellen, who has recently retired from her position as Vocal Music Director at Eden Prairie High School, had been digitizing family memorabilia and wanted a safe destination for the actual artifacts, as her siblings did not want them. Items included pictures and artifacts from the Plato school, her parents high school pictures and diplomas including class lists, other miscellaneous items from their lives and several examples of GHS and Eagles promotional clothing from the early 1980s.

Ellen grew up in Plato. Her family owned the Plato Garage. Both of her parents were GHS graduates, Willard graduating in 1937 and Virginia in 1941. She expressed great appreciation for the role her music teachers, choir director Cindy Yates and band director Cliff Kruse, played in stimulating and encouraging her and others from her school years to go into the field of music education. She was very impressed with the excellent job the city has done in preserving and repurposing the old Glencoe high and middle school building.
